studio notes #18

I am officially obsessed with needle lace. In addition to taking a class through the Surface Design Association, I’ve been working my way through a book called A Practical Guide to Needle Lace by Jacqueline Peter. I’ve been making little square samples of each of the fillings using embroidery floss I’ve been holding on to for years.

Working through the samples alongside the class has helped me identify a few more decisions I still need to make for the mourning veil, as well as start figuring out how to approach making such a large piece.

I’ve also realized I don’t really know how I want to finish the edging, so I’ll be making a few samples for that this week.

Another thing I’ve been working on is mapping out where I want each of the mushrooms to go. I really like the radial symmetry of the arrangement. Controlling where the mushroom pieces ended up was a challenge as I sampled it. I was starting to think it might not be possible for this one. BUT.  I’m hoping I can get closer to what I’m imagining by attaching the pieces to the fabric first. I am also spreading them apart more like my first paper mock up.

Hopefully, these are the last few problems I need to solve before I can get started on the actual veil. I’m getting really excited to see how all of this practice comes together.
