Floating City Ring began with a photograph of a house raised on tall stilts to accommodate rising water and I became fascinated by the idea of architecture adapting to a changing environment. I wanted to create a ring that echoed those elevated supports, with the plastic form appearing to float above the ring band.

The sculptural element is made from fused grocery bags, a material I had begun experimenting with while developing Moss Agate Cuff. As I worked, the piece gradually shifted away from my original idea. Instead of resembling a single house, the bundles of fused plastic strips began to feel like a dense cityscape suspended above the silver framework.

The changing title reflects that evolution. What began as City Ring later became Floating Topography before finally settling on Floating City. The work became less about a specific building and more about an imagined landscape shaped by environmental change.

Although this line of exploration remained a small part of Year of Plastic, it continues to stay with me. I explored similar floating ring bands again in my 2020 Bubble Wrap Minerals series, but the underlying idea has remained the same: a curiosity about how humans adapt to environmental change and how those stories can be explored through wearable objects. It is a thread I hope to return to in future work.
